4Baby Co-Sleeper

Absolutely love this cosleeper! It’s a must have for any new mum. My 3 month old still sleeps soundly in it at night and I’m convinced cosleepers are the only way! – Gabrielle

Specifications

  • Size: 69(W) x 93(L) x 66(H) cm (height is adjustable)
  • Suitable for: Birth to 9kg
  • Type: Converts from traditional to co-sleeper

If you’re looking for a bassinet you can use on its own or as a co-sleeper, then this is a good option. It has all the benefits of a traditional bassinet, like the mesh sides to ensure optimal airflow.

Where this bassinet is different, however, is that one of the sides drops down, so you can pull the bassinet close to the bed, and co-sleep with the baby. The height adjusts to five different settings, so should fit, no matter the height of your own bed.

Sometimes the bassinet can lean a little to one side, but replacing the mattress for a thicker one and ensuring the angles are fully locked should prevent this.

What we love

  • Lots of rooms for your baby
  • Simple design with adjustable height and angles to suit most beds
  • Easy to assemble

What we don’t love

  • The mattress provided isn’t that great so, I suggest getting another mattress

The cradle comes with a 3.8cm thick mattress that is firm and therefore safe for your precious newborn. it also comes with a travel bag for easy storage.

Why Use a Bassinet?

It’s generally recommended that the baby sleeps in the same room as parents for at least the first few months, which sounds good in theory, except we don’t all have huge rooms that will fit a full-size cot in. If that’s the case, then a bassinet is the answer.

It’s definitely not an essential item, and some parents prefer a baby to go straight into a cot. It’s really a personal choice and there isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. Ultimately it comes down to where baby and parent are happiest.

If you want to try co-sleeping, or would just feel better-having baby in the same room, then a bassinet is something you should try. They allow the baby to be much closer to you during the night, making it easier for the middle of the night feeds, and can lead to deeper bonding.

an image of a sleeping baby in the best bassinet

Types of Bassinets

There are a couple of different types of bassinet, and it can be quite confusing if you’ve never had one before. I’ll explain the differences below.

Traditional Bassinets

A traditional bassinet is just like a smaller version of a cot. It’s what comes to mind first when someone asks what is the best bassinet for a baby. Usually free-standing, with all four sides, it cocoons the baby in a snug environment.

Co-Sleeper Bassinets

Some families, however, prefer to co-sleep. In this case, the best bassinet for co-sleeping would be a perfect choice. The best co-sleeper bassinets have only three sides and attach to the side of your bed so you can be close to the baby all night.

Features of the Best Bassinets in Australia

So what features should you be thinking about when searching for the best bassinet in Australia. I’ll take you through some below.

Safety

Safety is obviously a huge consideration when buying anything for a new baby. You don’t want to buy anything that will endanger them, so make sure any bassinet you buy meets safety guidelines and works for you as a family.

There are no official safety standards for bassinets in Australia, but you could check for international standards, or check against the rocking cradle standard.

  • Correct fit for mattress and bedding
  • No soft material around the edge (mesh is best for better airflow)
  • Locking mechanism (if the bassinet rocks)
  • Sturdy feet, or bed attachment
  • No loose straps or ribbons

Age Range/Capacity

Think about how long you want the baby to sleep in the bassinet. Will it just be for a couple of months or longer? The best bassinet to buy depends on your choice. Make sure to buy a big enough one if you want a baby close to you for as long as possible, you don’t want to have to buy a new one at three months.

Most bassinets are designed to last until the baby is around six months old. As soon as the baby is rolling over, or able to pull themselves up, they should be moved to a full-sized cot.

Comfort & ventilation

As mentioned under safety considerations, mesh sides are a really important part of a bassinet. They allow air to flow through and ventilate the bassinet properly, especially if it’s a traditional model. I’d also strongly advise against getting a covered bassinet, for the same reason, unless it’s a mesh cover.

There are plenty of different materials to choose from when buying a bassinet, from wooden to plastic. It’s completely up to you which you choose, and each has pros and cons. Personally, I would suggest whichever is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and easiest to clean.

What is important when it comes to comfort, is having a well-fitted mattress and sheets, to ensure the baby doesn’t tangle in them. Experts advise getting a thin, hard mattress, and avoiding a pillow until the baby is at least a year old.

Height

There are a couple of considerations with height when picking a bassinet. The first is how far you have to bend down to pick up the baby. You obviously don’t want to be bending too far over, especially in the middle of the night. A co-sleeper bassinet would help this, as there is no barrier between you and your little one.

A really important consideration is how high the walls should be to keep baby safe, especially once they’re getting older. The bassinet shouldn’t be shallow enough that the baby could fall out if they manage to pull themselves up in the night. Remember, once the baby starts to roll and pull themselves up, they should begin to sleep in a cot.

Extra Features

There are a few other features that, while not necessary, are nice add-ons and make for a much happier baby.

  • Rocking – this can help soothe babies if they aren’t sleeping well. Make sure the locking mechanism locks for safety. If you are looking for rocking nursing chairs, check out some here!
  • Adjustable height – if you’re looking for a more traditional bassinet, a height adjustment can be really helpful if the baby is positioned next to the bed. It will also help your aches if you’re not having to bend over so much.
  • Wheels/foldable – having a portable bassinet is really helpful. It means you can easily travel with it, but also move it around your house during the day.
  • Storage pockets – as any new parent will tell you, you can never have enough storage for all the extras that come with a new baby. Nappies, blankets, muslins, bibs. There’s never enough space, so help yourself out and get a bassinet with storage pockets.
  • Other – other little extras include mobiles, vibrations, or music. They may not be necessary, but if you can stretch your budget a little, they’re definitely not a bad extra to have.

FAQs

What is co-sleeping?

Basically, this is exactly what it sounds like. You and baby sleep next to each other, usually using a co sleeping bassinet, to make it easier for you to see them and pull them over to you for feeding. It helps sync your sleeping patterns and is a great bonding experience.

Why should a baby sleep in my room?

Most doctors advise a baby to be kept in your room for at least the first six months. Studies have shown a decrease in the chance of SIDS when the baby sleeps close to you.

Should I get a traditional or co-sleeper?

Honestly, this is not a question I can answer for you. It’s completely a personal choice. I’ve tried to give you a good range of bassinets to choose from, but ultimately whether you want the baby to co-sleep with you, or sleep on their own is entirely your choice. I know parents who have done it both ways and both worked equally well for them.
